Onboarding templates

For administrators, engineering managers 5 min read

ELOS proposes each engineering team's day-one plan from your tools. Approve it once, and everyone your identity provider adds to that team gets it automatically.

Before you begin

  • The Manage people permission.
  • Your identity provider syncing groups (directory sync), and source control connected, so teams own services.

You don't write onboarding templates. For every team that owns services, ELOS proposes what a new member needs on day one, from what your tools already say: the access to request and what to learn. You decide.

What a proposal contains

PartWhere it comes from
Day-one accessOnly tools you've connected: the team's repositories or source-control team, on-call for its most critical services, issue tracking, the development cloud account and cluster, and dashboards. Each item says why it was proposed
Learning journeyThe kind of engineering most of the team does (backend, frontend, platform, data or leadership), and the team's services, most critical first
ChecklistYour workspace's onboarding checklist

Approve a template

  1. Open Get started and choose the Onboarding essentials step, or open Onboarding templates directly.
  2. Each team shows Needs a decision, with its proposed access and the services its journey covers.
  3. Untick any access item you don't want new members to get.
  4. Choose Approve, or Dismiss if the team shouldn't have an automatic plan.

What happens next

When your identity provider adds someone new to an approved team, ELOS gives them the plan on its own: the onboarding checklist, the access requests (each still goes to its approvers) and their learning journey. Their onboarding page says the plan came from their team's template.

If your tools change (a team takes on a new critical service, say), the template shows Changed since approval. New members keep getting the approved version until you approve the new one.

What's next

  • Register a joiner: Add a new engineer once HR has hired them. ELOS starts their onboarding and a day-one plan automatically.
  • Track onboarding and clear blockers: See every joiner's progress, where onboarding is stuck and who can unblock it, and request their day-one access in one step.
